Making simple tools for sculpting polymer clay

This week I want to talk about making simple tools for sculpting polymer clay

In the search for the perfect tools it becomes very individual.

You can spend a lot of money in art stores hoping to find the right tools for your sculpting. Making simple tools for sculpting polymer clay is a fun alternative and can be an interesting creative endeavour and something fun to make on a fall day in the studio.

In preparation, I went for a walk on the beach. There I found some interesting driftwood sticks to use for handles. That was just what I felt like doing because the beautiful day needed my attention before I sat still to work on this post.

delicate needle tools and ball tools are often hard to find. making simple tools for sculpting polymer clay is a great idea . . .

With the scale of work we do in polymer and the sensitive nature of the material’s surface you need fine tools and they are often not available. I set out to make some simple tools for sculpting polymer clay for my personal sculpting. It makes and interesting project for you to make yours alongside me.

In my “dead paintbrush” jar I found a suitable handle for another tool idea. You can use whatever you wish for a handle. This is one example of fun you have with creative ideas and non-expensive practical need.

The reality is that you can sculpt with anything. I once heard a story of someone whose favourite sculpting tool was an old awl tool from a shoe maker. Over the years, students have gifted me tools that were everyday household items taped to the ends of old paintbrushes. Greaet idea and in a way, very similar to how I make my pin and ball tools, just on a larger scale.

Creativity requires the courage to let go of certainty.
